Jorge and Bentley,

I really appreciate all that you have done with the forum and the season points posting.

Where can I go to see the season points accumulated so far?

What did you find?  Only thing I see is here: http://www.wisconsintrials.org/points_tool/wota_points.html

And that's missing the Polo and second Wauzeka weekend's points.  Unless I'm using it wrong?

Bentley, I know you are still getting caught up after your job change situation, so no big rush, but I'm assuming that at some point I'll be able to see all weekends in the the points tool?

Should be done by Thursday.  I had some contract work going earlier this week... all the fields are there now, I just need to add the points to the database.

All updated to current.  Jorge, please check them to make double-certain I haven't made any errors.

Check Matt Tucker especially. I had him double entered. I think I fixed it now though.

Dave & Jorge,

I took the front page link to the points tool off the site.  The tool is still there. But Dave didn't like it, and I didn't much enjoy working on it.  The tool/page is still up, just obviously not updated.

So here are the options I think are possible for 2008..

1.  Use excel locally, copy to web.  As you can see getting data from excel to the web in an easily readable format is -not- easy.   Pasting it into forum posts almost never works right.   I went through every excel possiblity I could think of and never found a good solution.   It's great for desktop work.  Just not good for the web.

2.  Just enter them manually in the forums.
This just seems like a dumb use of the tools to me.

3.  Make the points app work like it should.  This is largely a time/interest problem on my part.

4.  Switch it to google spreadsheets.  Here's a quick test: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pb8lq8i1aEgmOGpYny5vXIA

Thoughts?

Wow, I hadn't looked into the Google docs yet... that's pretty cool.

I took your sample a bit further b-man and came up with: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p9MuoPExqbX7jqEwo-MWXTQ&gid=11

Notice the multiple tabs, one for each event and the first one is the cumulative points.  Obviously not finished for this year, but you get the idea.

Google Spreadsheets don't have all the capability of regular Excel spreadsheets, especially in the database lookup functions, so I had to use VLookup for the championship sheet, which has the shortcoming that the source array has to be in sort order.  In other words, the individual event sheets would need to be sorted by person's names rather than Class/points.   The summary sheet can be put in any order you want though, so this would work until someone has the time to create a true online database app.  I wish I could commit to working on one myself this winter, but since I'm getting back into skiing I'm hoping to be on the slopes this winter rather than sitting in front of the computer.   Smiley

Anyway, I sure hope you get that knee fixed up right Bent and we see you out there again some day.  Thanks for everything you've done with the club website.

Dude, I think your employer isn't working you hard enough...

My original points tool has a full database connection, sitting on top of PHP.  We -could- make it do anything we want.  It's just a problem of time/effort/interest.

But I think switching to google docs makes the most sense. It's simple, has a UI that's familiar to everybody, doesn't require much special knowledge and would get the job done in a way that I think the points keepers would be comfortable with.

Just waiting for Jorge & Dan to chime in..

I am pretty booked up right now.   Undecided  I am interested, but no time at this point.  November will be a better month for me to check this out, and will look at it then.

Thanks for finding some new tools to try out!

Same with me. I am busy with year end awards, sanction meetings etc.
Thanks for working on this, we really need something for next year.
Remember though, it must be user friendly.
