Hixton Trials
Dave Schigoda, Dan Salton, Jesse and I worked on the trials sections yesterday. We have 8 sections picked out and are in need of some manpower to finish them up.
I will go up with anyone willing to help set up and get things ready for the event. There are at least 6-8 hrs of work left for a crew of 3-4 people, as all of these sections are new and need some brushing out, this does not include ribboning and signing.
Remember that these are all new sections are are totally different that the traditional Hixton sections.
A "BIG THANKS" to Dave and Dan for coming out to help.

Re: Hixton Trials
That was one tough days work. I was
sacked
by the end of the day (we spent 7 solid hours walking up and down hills, clearing ferns and brush, swinging machetes, sawing with saws...). I was happy to help out Jorge - it's cool to take some virgin woods, get a picture in your mind of what could be done with it, and turn it into a trials section. A lot of work, but cool.
I'll work on a map today that will lay out where the 8 sections are. There are a couple of sections that are pretty well figured out where the different lines would be. In these sections enough trees are marked to give an idea of the boundaries. But most of the sections are just a general "put section here" type of thing, that have the worst of the clearing done, but with boundaries pretty much unmarked and class lines not completely figured out. Like Jorge said, there's still at least a full days work for a crew to do. I won't be able to make any more trips up there before July 22, but hopefully others will be able to help Jorge out.
If you haven't ridden at CMJ Raceway before (the raceway property itself, not the quarry where the old Hixton trial was held), then you'll find big hills, fairly sandy soil, and a general shortage of rocks. Expect to do a lot of hill climbing, descending and side-cutting. Should be fun!

OK, here's a map:
http://local.live.com/?v=2&cid=D454939D0F6FC466!180&encType=1
I'll make hard-copies of this and bring them to the trial on July 22 to hand out to riders during registration.

Re: Hixton Trials
The map is most cool. Never saw that before.
I went a stem further, and viewed the baraboo hills.
Then clicked on 3d, and flew up mt.whitney in CA.
It's like a travel video game. Lotsa fun!
Will look forward to the new hixton.

Re: Hixton Trials
Hey, that was a fun day in the woods on Saturday. I had so much fun, I had to take a long nap on Sunday afternoon to recover!
Thanks for the maps and text Dan. Its perfect for directing the remaining section development/marking, navigating, motivation, communication, memory, etc. I thought the four of us worked well together (Jesse included) on Saturday, very creative, and got a lot done together! I plan on driving out again on Friday afternoon, July 20th, probably camp at the KOA (or ?). I would then be available to work all Saturday 10-12 hours, and for a few hours Sunday morning (8am-10am?). I will bring a working chainsaw
, weedeater, tape, etc.

Re: Hixton Trials - Ribbon - Cheap source? - styrofoam pie plate test- notes
Does anyone know of a cheap source for red, blue and yellow ribbon?
We will need a lot of it for Hixton.
I am conducting a test on styrofoam pie plate "markers" in my woods, to see how they hold up to rain, sun, animals, etc. It would seem to me that they would be less affected by rain than paper plates (so we can put them up earlier if needed). They do take magic marker just fine, and the plate and markings are both waterproof.
I plan to add more detailed notes to Dan's section text when I get time later in the week, in order to capture some of the details of our ideas (from last Saturday) of where the novice, intermediate and advanced lines could be, for most of the sections. That way Jorge and others could use the text as a guide for early layout work, and markings, and still take advantage of what we already discovered and discussed.

Re: Hixton Trials
I have a lot of ribbon that I will bring to polo this Sunday.
Mark Doll has ribbon too that can be had after his July 1st event.
He uses
http://www.gemplers.com/groups/flagging-tape.aspx
for ribbon
which he buys in lots of 144 rolls.
I will be at Hixton sat or sun the week before the event, to help as needed.

Re: Hixton Trials
I am assuming that the "Supersport" lines/sections will mostly be set up in the Quarry area with the Expert/Champ sections, and not the CMJ areas that Jorge, Dan and I worked on several days ago. Correct?

Re: Hixton Trials
I spoke with Steve and he would like Super Sport to run slightly modified Advanced lines.
Steve will take care of setting up Expert and Champ lines in the old quarry, and will will set up the rest around CMJ.
The next work day will be Saturday the 14th for Steve K. and Rod Villand, and Jim A. Dave S. and I will be there on Sunday the 15th.
This event will pay dual district points so the turnout should be good.
If anyone else can make it out, let me know.

Re: Hixton Trials - Update
Jim A. and I worked at Hixton yesterday and cleaned and ribboned 1 section. We still need to clean out 2 more sections and ribbon off 7 sections. I will be going out on Friday late afternoon to do what I can, but really need help on Saturday to finish the sections.
We have 2 Champ/Expert sections at CMJ and the rest should be at the quarry.
I will be staying at the KOA campground in Hixton if you need to find me.
Dan and Dave, I did not like the section on the up road and found a much better area on the same up road closer the the top. It is ribboned and just needs plates and splits.
