With only a bit over 3 1/2 weeks until the Duluth NATC national, a crew of 8 ascended Spirit Mountain this past weekend and commenced set up.  It was a very productive weekend as we completed 8 Sections (1 thru 4 for Saturday & Sunday) and a good part of the loop.

Using some of the areas from the last World Round, Sir Patrick Smage  should invoke some awe in the Pro class.  It is our understanding that Cody Webb is expected to have recovered from his injury will likely also be present.

Clubman - Jim Winterer is serving as "clubman consultant" resultant in very rideable sections for that class.  He filled in some holes and opened up corners that I would not have, but he is the Duke of Clubman.  He wants it to be fun for the less experienced riders and I will have to agree that it will be.

Support lines are technical, difficult at times, but again rideable.

If you haven't signed up yet, 12 days left.  Go to wwwmototrials.com and click on "competitor info" for online sign up and any info you might need.

Spectators/workers......
$10.00 gate fee gets you a wrist band for both days.  An additional one time fee of $10.00 for primitive camping in the paddock area.  Aerostich has a rally in conjunction with the event and features a BBQ Dinner on Saturday nite for $10.00   For those of you that were there 5 years ago, it was  very good and if you left hungry, it was your fault.  For more info on the Aerostich rally go to www.boringrally.com

Workers Grin...if you work the event not only do you get a free wrist band for you and your significant other, you also get free primitive camping in the pit areas and a free passes to the BBQ Dinner.  You do not have to be a qualified section observer to work.  We will also need time keepers and card punchers ,which we can teach Monkeys to do, but would prefer to use people  Cheesy )

Any questions...feel fee to ask away.

Well now that I read:

"...Clubman - Jim Winterer is serving as "clubman consultant" resultant in very rideable sections for that class.  He filled in some holes and opened up corners..."

I'm considering attending.   Grin   [I would need to take my last 2 vacation days of the year to get there and back, though.]    Roll Eyes

Club 95,
First of all , thanks for all the info you have put forth on and about the Duluth Nat. My first question is can you leave 2-3 poster's  for me at Dickeyville, I cant make it Sat. but will be there on Sun.
I reserved a campsite at Spirit Mtn.campgrounds as soon as you made your first post about the upcoming event, what I was wondering was will I need to set up a "pit area" in the parking lot of the event , or will I be able to access the event from the camp ground?

Ralph,

I believe you can as I have ridden from the Chalet to the campground in the past...may not be completely legal, but I have never heard of anyone being confronted on the issue.  I am going to Duluth on the weekend of the 10th and will check into for you.

Dave,

Our goal is to make the Clubman sections very rideable.  I am very comfortable with what I have seen so far.  IMHO   Cheesy

An e-mail from Ben Winterer........ Cool

Hello,
We're in need of checkers for the Duluth National on August 24th and 25th.

It should be a lot of fun...the US Nationals (http://www.mototrials.com/) do not use the no-stop rule, so the rules would be the same as what we use in the UMTA. You don't need to be an experienced rider to check either...there will be some training available before the event. So if your spouses, friends, siblings, etc. are willing to check as well, they are more than welcome! I've ridden a "few" nationals and have seen many non-riders checking sections to support the local clubs, and they always seem like the ones having the most fun!

Checkers will also receive: free entry into the national for you and your family, free camping, and there is also a BBQ on Saturday night that we (my uncle Mark) thinks will be free as well.

The national will again be held at the same time as the Very Boring Rally (http://www.boringrally.com/) so it should be a very fun weekend up at Spirit Mountain!

If that isn't incentive enough...Bear will also be riding the national so there is always a VERY good chance he'll crash! And that's fun for the whole family!

For more information or to sign-up to be a checker, please contact Mark Winterer at 651-231-2602 (cell).

Thanks!

Ben

Jon Nelson & company posted a very nice map of the NATC National on      www.umta.org
Sections 7 thru 12 are very easily spectated while 1 thru 6 will require some hiking boots.

#7 &#8 are just below the Chalet by Tommi Ahvala's Wall

#9 is a short walk along the 1st road below the chalet

#10 is fairly close along and just above that road by Elephant's back
Elephant's back is just right of Dougie's Wall.....the humungo wall where Lampkin came up short and broke his forks upon impact Huh

#11 is just above the Cahlet below some of the Villas and #12 is at the Chalet.

IMHO, 6 thru 12 are very good sections and very spectator friendly.

C u all there  Cheesy

The National was a hugh success  Grin  The people...riders, spectators, the ever congenial importers and most importantly, the workers.

A big thumbs up to the WOTA presence....I believe there were 16 entries from WI & IL WOTA affiliated riders.  Let me express very very sincere appreciation to Sherri (sp?), Kevin & Mike for working as Observers.  My apologies if I missed anyone who helped & please let me know so that we might recognize them!

Of course Pat was the highlight of the Trial.  With scores too low in the Pro class on Saturday, we threw in some 2008 World round stuff for Sunday and Pat turns in an even lower score.  All the other Pro scores went up considerably.  And of course we have to recognize multi time National Support Champion rider Dave Rohschneider...teh only rider I know that consistently complains that his scores are too low Roll Eyes

Was good to see and chat with all!  And again, a very special thanks to all that worked, the biggest piece to the success puzzle  Cool

Yes indeed ,it felt like  a very well run local event with 13 of 19 clubliners and 12 of 29 support riders coming from IL/WI/IA/or MN  and a one or 2 more canucks  .  Definitely would have been a record low turnout without hefty local rider support. Also adding to Local feel was the very easy time limit and observing that generally allowed a very generous amount of reverse travel, not quite to the extent of the once famous UMTA  Y Turn  but generous from what I saw , Not saying it in a bad way ,I feel scorers are more often too strict than needed typically.  Of course 6 or more of the "local" entries do have a habit of attending more than 1 NATC a year.  I wonder if any of the newbies will get motivated to do more. I hear next year OK, Kansas and Nebraska are all interested in hosting. That would be a pretty good deal for mid westerners.

We tried to shorten the time limit because of low turnout (which was better than New Mexico & Arizona), but were overruled by the NATC.  If for no other reason, it really drags the event out for the checkers and  becomes quite boring waiting for riders. Angry Huh

I want to extend congratulations to a former WOTA member, Pat Smage, winning the #1 plate at the NATC MotoTrials in Duluth, MN, his Sixth Pro Title.  I enjoyed both days, scoring at #12 on Sat. and #4 on Sun.  It was good to see so many riders I have met over the last 6 year, attending events with my husband.  Congratulations to all who rode.
