Anyone have any experience with a good dealer for a gasgas trials bike near Milwaukee? (Yes, I was the guy in Mauston with the GG that wouldn't stay running)

Thanks,

Steve

I've called rising sun and ordered a few parts from them, none of which were the problems that I had.  I don't even know where to start.  I thought it was a sticky needle and seat but replaced that and its now still stalling after 5-15 minutes of riding.  Then it's very hard to start up again and often won't until it sits for a while or I choke it and kick away, then it still doesn't run right... I'm not even sure if its the carb now or if maybe its electrical... It runs great and starts on the first kick but once it decides to cut out, the games over.

Cliff notes
- Bike will run for a little while then die, and become hard to start, if I let it sit then it will start again.
- fuel flows from the petcock but will not go into the carb, big air bubble can't even get gas in blowing down the tube.
- Plug is slightly oily
- Tried shortening up the fuel line, tank vent is clear.
- Jetting is 114 main, 36 pilot, needle 2nd clip from the top

Have you looked at the float, float needle and seat? Have you tried cleaning the carb out? (soaking it in carb cleaner). I don't know about Gas Gas bikes but I know some bikes have a fuel filter attached to the fuel petcock inside the gas tank. It may allow fuel to flow but not at a rate that sustain the engine running. Just some things that come to mind....... Hope it helps!

Some other things that came to mind......... have you tried it with the fuel valve on the reserve position? Once the bike dies have you tried opening the float drain screw and if so do you get any fuel out of it? It really sound to me like it's not getting fuel. Also is there debris is the gas tank? Maybe it needs to be flushed out.

I have:

- cleaned the carb
- put in a new needle and seat
- checked the tank and petcock and tried to run it on reserve.
- checked the fuel filter on the carb. I am running an inline filter but that seems to be flowing fine.  (I plan on removing that as soon as I can get some new lines)
- I did crack the drain screw and fuel came out, but I also messed with it a bit so that's fuzzy data.
- I keep hearing that the floats have to be parallel to the ground/bowl but I'm not really positive on how to check that.  I assume that when I push the floats up the "tang" should be parallel to the ground when the needle hits the seat?
- New Plugs
- Jetting is all correct for sea level. (114 main, 36 pilot, 2nd clip on the needle)
- Bike runs great when its running.

i agree with hackman again. .
either two much gas, (flooding) ovbiously when its running
OR not enough gas to sustain the engine running
i would believe that if it runs, for 15 min then you are filling up the bowl with gas and running on that,
and then when that is gone your bike dies, hence, not getting enough gas,
lines, petcock, or maybe you breather line for your gas tank is clogged and can get enough air, creating a vacuum not allowing the gas to flow down the line

Not having seen the bike...gonna take a stab at it.  Could be the pipe.  Gets hot (15 minutes of riding) and what ever is plugging it expands to the point now chokes it off.  After cools down good, contracts and bike runs again.  Best test is find someone with same bike or bike with same pipe and switch.  If solves the problem, you got ur answer.  It happens...and will drive you crazy. Undecided

BTW, after bike quits, have you tried removing gas cap and trying it again?  That will tell you is gas tank breather is plugged.  Also make sure carb breather lines are open

What year/model is your Gas Gas?

2001 txt 280.  Not the pro or edition.

I have also tried the fuel cap/breather. It is venting fine.  I started it and road around the other day, it will start with the choke on after it dies if I kick it 5-10 times. But will then only run a few minutes or less.

Have you checked the compression??   if you went through the carb already thats the only thing else I could come up with (or maybe an exhaust blockage but not likely in my opinion).
