When you say "here" do you mean Wisconsin? or North America?  I know there were trials events held in Michigan on a regular basis since the mid 1960's, and I have read trials coverage of events in the U.S. in motorcycle magazines from the 1950's.  The articles had photos of guys on Harleys, Triumphs, and BSA's riding across a stream with at least 6 inches of water and mud in it!!!

The articles were titled "Observed Trials Event Results". 

That's what trials were in those days.
