Just added my no vote to the above poll - I'm a rebel.
Not that it matters, since I'm out-voted anyway.
But I am willing to change my vote, given the right system to award points.
I have heard a quintillion ways to do it, but what is the best way?

I spoke to our grand high mystic ruler (Mark) today, who gave me his version.
The following is from Mark (that he asked me to post here for discussion)

• An event organizer can distribute up to 60 worker points for each days event.
• A worker can earn up to 20 additional points for each event as well as earning
  up to 20 riding points in your class. (Each days event = 40 points possible)
• Although 20 work points per event is the maximum that can be earned, a worker
  may earn less, depending on how much work or time is put in.
  The amount of work points received will be at the discretion of the event organizer.
• Throughout the season, a person can accumulate work points.
  Therefore with our schedule of 10 wota events where work points may be earned,
  a really hard worker may earn 200 additional points towards a district 16 season award.
  Therefore:
  200 work points possible.
  240 riding points possible. (12 event schedule)
  =440 possible points to be had by an insanely hard worker and a really good rider.
  But in reality only 200 possible points, because there are 2 throwout events,
  and anyone that wins every event will also throwout all the work points too.
  
• Note: A season awards tiebreaker is that riding points take precedence over work points.
• On this website, we should present each of the different ways to award points.
  Then at the spring elkhorn event, we will have a vote by "wota members only"
  Just one more reason to join WOTA!

I don't think they are bad ideas, but they do need to be discussed and fine tuned.
(Remember, I am in the vote "no" for work points category unless I change my mind by elkhorn)

I actually think that Mark's ideas are not to bad and could certainly be tried.

It is as good as any system I've heard of, although a tad confusing.
As Mark told me, it does reward hard workers, and that is what wota needs to put
on quality events.


However, I immediately saw a flaw that I believe would be unfair to some people.
I would like to see added, that a person may only receive a maximum of 20 work
points at any one location.
Elkhorn, Wauzeka, Platteville, Dickeyville, Baraboo, Hixton.
6 locations=120 work points possible.

My thinking is that riders who live near or at one location,
will not be able to pick up a lot of work points easily.

Sounds complicated and subjective, but it might be fair.  

At D22 off road races, they ask people to work one event per season.  They receive the same number of points as their average finish throughout the season.  This assumes that the person is working the event, not riding it.  But it also assumes that same person has helped work the event, prior to actual race day too.

It basically means for the people who are chasing points, they do not lose out by working instead of riding an event.

I know it's not quite the same scenario as a trials, but that's how they do it.

My only concern is, that you should not be able to make up for lack of riding skills, with worker points.  In my opinion it should still be about riding ability for a season championship.

But it would be nice to earn some bonus points for working an event.  And for those who go the extra mile and work numerous events, maybe year end awards for workers?

I am only in favor of worker points like we used to do  ; 20  for working an event    (a one time award) but not as much in favor of saying you have to sit that event out like we used to .  With the effort to travel an extra time or more to the area some benefit should be had.    And its tough to know if a limit  per event makes sense  ,probably if a max of 20 worker points per year was used then everyone who did a reasonable amountof work??  should get the 20   or equivalent of a win   but I also see where   awarding a rider s  average points scored per event ,makes sense too   escpecially if forced to sit that event out( which I dont think we should do  because we so much need entrants  its tough to turn people away  .How do other clubs DO IT   ? UMTA NITRO  guys?????

NITRO is struggling with this issue too.

My opinion is this...
20 points for working an event.
The trialsmaster is responsible for who gets points.
This is a one time deal per season and per person.
You can either get worker points for the day or ride points, not both.
Example...
10 rides count = 200 possible points.
10 rides count + 20 worker points = 220 possible points for year end awards.
This awards/motivates people to work an event per year.
Keeping it simple....

I prefer the KISS principle...."keep it simple stupid".

20 points for working an event.........the trialsmaster determines who deserves points for an event..........and you can ride it also.

Can count it as one of your rides, but not as additional points.

Put simply....encourages people to work and offers no advantage in that all riders have the option to work.  If all work, it is a wash.  If you don't work, then you must ride better.

You can ride the event that you work to count it as one of your 10.  You get 20 work points for it . Remember, only 10 rides count for year end awards.

Points, who needs stinking points.  They should be saved for riding in events.  Everyone should be assigned to work a particular event or two or whatever is needed at the beginging of the season. 

I think it would also be nice to have a running points tally thru the season so we know who is a member and how many points they have.

I must agree with Kavmann on this issue.  (Along with Cabellaro) Awarding worker points for each event, would be way too many points distributed just for working.  Therefore the guy who doesnt have to work weekends could possibly run away with the points lead by just working.  Oppose to people like me who work some weekends and find it hard to get the event days off as it is.  I believe that a rider could be awarded 20 extra points for working ONE event therefore it would not get too out of hand with, who has worked where and for how long, etc.  This way there is a bonus for helping out and we could get everyone to pitch in.  I think this would be the best way to keep both sides happy.
